LED colour temperature: 3000K vs 4000K vs 6500K

The K number on an LED tells you the colour of the light, not how bright it is. Pick the colour by room.

3000KWarm white

Cosy and yellowish. Bedrooms, living rooms, dining areas.

4000KCool / natural white

Neutral and clear. Kitchens, study rooms, offices, bathrooms.

6500KDaylight

Bright and bluish. Workshops, garages, store rooms, shops, outdoor security.

Brightness is lumens, not watts

Compare the lumens (lm) on the box. A 9 to 10 W LED bulb gives roughly 800 to 1,000 lm, about the same as an old 60 W bulb.

Tips

  • Keep one colour per room so the lights match.
  • E27 is the standard screw base for household bulbs.
  • For downlights, check the ceiling cut-out size before you buy.
