Hollow section 1.2 mm vs 1.6 mm: which one do you need?
Steel hollow sections (方通) come in two common wall thicknesses: 1.2 mm and 1.6 mm. Same outside size, different strength, weight and price. Here is how to choose.
Choose 1.2 mm for
- Ceiling and partition frames
- Light shelves, racks and display frames
- Signboard frames, light grilles and small gates
- Furniture and DIY projects where weight matters
Choose 1.6 mm for
- Main gates, fences and auto-gate frames
- Awning, canopy and car porch frames with light roofing
- Frames that carry weight or get knocked often
- Outdoor work: thicker walls last longer once rust starts
Welding tip
1.6 mm is easier to weld without burning through. On 1.2 mm, use a thinner electrode and lower current.
